REGULATIONS AND SYLLABI FOR POST GRADUATE COURSE IN SIDDHA MEDICINE
(i.e.) M.D.SIDDHA.

I. AIMS AND OBJECTS: -

The main aim of Postgraduate education should be acquisition of specialised knowledge in Siddha Medicine, it also aims at producing competent scholars, experts, Scientists, teachers, clinicians in Siddha Medicine, Pharmaceutical experts and Research workers to carry on the work relating to Siddha Medicine in Universities, Research laboratories and other institution of a Higher learning.

At the Post graduate level of teaching in, Siddha Medicine viz., M.D. Siddha students are taught about elements of Modem Medicine and also "Recent, methods and advances in Modem Medicine solely for the purpose of keeping the students in Siddha Medicine abreast with the developments in Modem Medicine. This shall not, however entitle them to practice modem medicine.

II. DURATION
The post-graduate course in Siddha Medicine shall be of three years duration.

III. ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION TO THE COURSE: -
i) Persons who have passed Bachelor of Indian Medicine Degree course examination conducted by the Madurai. University or an examination accepted by the syndicate as equivalent there to,
ii) Persons who have passed Bachelor of Siddha Medicine & Surgery;
iii) Persons who hold degree in Siddha Maruthuvam, the duration's of which must be at least four years and have undergone an internship of Hospital for not less than six months and conducted by the Institutions as recognized by the State Government, or Central Government, or the Graduates of Siddha of foreign countries as recommended by the Government of India.

REGISTRATION: -
A candidate for the M.D. Degree shall register himself prior to the commencement of the course on the 1 st April or October paying the prescribed fees.

BRANCHES OF STUDY:-

The following specialities in the post-graduate course of study in Siddha Medicine can be taken up under various branches as detailed below :-

BRANCH I : Siddha Maruthuvam-moola The Thathuvam (Fundamental Principal of Siddha Medicine)
BRANCH II : Udal Koorugal and Thathuvam (Applied Anatomy and physiology)
BRANCH III Gunapadam Mooligain Vaguppu (Materail Medical and vegetable Kingdom) Gunapadam - Thathu Jeeva Vaguppu (Metals, Minerals etc.)
BRANCH IV : Siddha Mamtuvam-pothu (General Medicine) including Sirappu Maruthuvam
BRANCH V : Aruval Maruthuvam and Porigalm Marthvam (surgery and diseases of the sense organs)
BRANCH VI : Magalir Mamthuvam-Sool Maruthuvam (Gyneacology and Obstetrics)
BRANCH VII : Pillaipini Maruthuvam (Paediatrics)
BRANCH VIII : Siddha- Maruthuvam ilakiyangal (Classics in Siddha Medicine)

Note : Specialities noted against the following branches can be taken up in a phased programme
Branch : I, II, V, VI, VII, and VIII

V. METHOD OF TRAINING

The main object of Post-graduate education should be acquisitions of advanced Knowledge in respective subjects. It aims to produce competent scholars and scientists to carry on the work in the Universities, research, institutions and other scientific organisations and teaching institutions of Indian Systems of Medicine (Siddha)

It is also imperative to include in the Post-graduate course thorough understanding of the subject, capacity for critical thinking -to arrive at independent judgement and to quicken the Intellectual impulses which lead to research.

The emphasis should be laid on, in service training and not on didactic lectures. The candidate should take part in Seminars group discussions, clinical meetings and reference and to visit other research centres.

The Candidates are required to write dissertations with detailed information. The indoor training requires the candidate to be resident in the campus and assume graded responsibility in the management and treatment of patients entrusted to them. The adequate training in the basic sciences of Udal Koorugal and Udal Thathuvam (Anatomy and physiology) and also in modern biochemistry, biophysics, pharma­cology in all their applied aspects relevant to the specialty concerned are to be given. The candidates are required to participate in teaching and training programmers of under-graduate students.

VI. ATTENDANCE:

1. The student will be required to attend at least 85% of total lectures and practicals in each subject before he/she will be allowed to appear for the examination. The syndicate may, however, consider special cases on merit.

2. The student will also be required to attend hospital duty daily till the completion of the course,and during the third year, he will be required to perform housemenship and /or Tutorship without any additional remuneration as instructed by the Principal.

3. The student will, in addition to above, also be required to attend any special lectures, demonstrations, seminars study-tour and to participate in such other educational activities. The students will attend to field work in the Collection of Medicinal plants and have contact with Reputed Siddha physicians..

VII. EXAMINATION OF DISSERTATION

1. Once the title of dissertation is accepted, the student will not be allowed to change the proposed scheme of workout prior sanction of the authorities concerned.

2. Working for a dissertation should be well utilised for intensive study of relevant literature, collecting noted scientific data, experiments, seminars and for its critical study. The dissertations must consist of the student's own account of research. The student should able to re-express his/her observations and draw conclusions on the basic of the study of literatures in field.

3. The dissertation should be suitable for its publication in an abridged form.

4. In no caste, a paper written or published in joint names of two or more persons shall be accepted as dissertation. The student may, however, submit in support of his/her dissertation a published work of which he/she is the author or co-author.

5. The dissertation should contain at the end a summary of not more than 150 words embodying the conclusion arrived at by the student.

6. The dissertations must be written on one side of the paper with a margin of one inch on either side and must be bound. On the outer cover, the title of the disser­tation, the name of the dissertation, the name of the department, the name of the student, the name of the guide and the year of submission of the dissertation should be mentioned. The dissertation shall not ordinarily exceed 150 type written pages and should not be less than 50 pages including chart, diagram, photograph. Bibliography etc.

7. The dissertation should be submitted during the third year of the examination each branch of the M.D. Siddha course. The last date for submission of dissertation is 1st October of the year preceding the year of final examination.

8. Four copies of Tamil with English explanatory notes bound dissertation together with a certificate from the head of the department must be submitted to the University through the principal of the College on or before the date prescribed for the submission. One spare copy has to kept with the student for reference.

9. The dissertation when accepted shall become the property of the University and permission to publish the same shall first be obtained from the university. In no case, it should be published before it is accepted.

10. One copy of the accepted dissertation will be kept in the university Library, one in the College library, one copy for the guide.

11. If the dissertation is not approved, it will be returned to the student with the re marks of the examiner and the student can resubmit the same after complying with the observations made by the examiners. The student will be given two chances for resubmission of the dissertation at the end of six months period each after the first submission.

VIII. Examinations: -

There shall be three parts in the examinations as details below: -

Part I Examination: Shall be conducted after the completion of the first academic year;
Part II Examination: Shall be conduct after the completion of the second academic year;
Part III Examination: Shall be conducted after the completion of the third academic. Year; it will consist of the two sections: -
Section I : Shall consist of examination in Theory, 'Practical 'and viva voce;'
Section II: Dissertation.

The details of examinations to be conducted under part I, II & III of the following Branches are furnished in annexure I, II and III respectively.

i) Branch III (Gunapadam Mooligai Thathu and Jeeva Vaguppu)
ii)Branch IV (Siddha Maruthuvam Pothu Including Sirappu Maruthuvam)

The details of examination under, parts I, II & III to be conducted for the remaning Branches will be drawn up after the introduction of these branches of study is approved in principle.

IX. STUDENT TEACHER RATIO:

The student teacher ration shall be 1:1, however number of Post-graduate students in Post-graduate department shall not be more than 5.

II. There will be separate minimum of 50% marks for theory and Viva-Voce put together and Practical or clinical to secure a pass in the first year examination.

Students will be required to submit a record of laboratory work done by them during the course of study for the first year examination.
The examination will be held in the month of April & October if the candidate fails in the third trial, the name will be removed from the register. The student will not be required to appear for the subjects in which he/she has earned exemption.

Note: There will be no examination in those subjects (Sl. No. 3) a certificate of having undergone training in the above subjects should be produced before joining.

There will be a separate minimum of 50% marks or theory' and Viva-Voce put together and practical clinical to secure a pass in the second year examination.

Students will be required to submit a record of laboratory work done by them during the course of study for the second year examination.

The examination will be held in the month of April and October, if he/she fails in the, third trail, the name will be removed from the Register. The student will not be required to appear for the subjects in which he/she has earned exemption.

PART II

4. EXAMINATION OF DISSERTATION

After the second year examination, the student will be require to give examination of dissertation at the end of the third year, if his/her dissertation is approved by the examiners.

There will be a Viva-voce-test or the practical examination on the subjects of the dissertation comprising 100 marks in the aggregates.

The dissertation should represent the out come of methodology and scientific re­search pursued by the student on the problems Selected by him and completed under the guidance of the head of the department.

The student will have to submit the dissertation on or before the date prescribed in Tamil & in English translation of the same.

Before the student is allowed to under take the work in dissertation the title of the dissertation shall have to be registered with the University within one month from the declaration of the result of the second year examination.

(i) In the application for the registration of dissertation full title of the dissertation and the methodology indicating the familiarity with the subject of the student and;
(ii) The name of the departments shall be specifically mentioned.

PART II

There will be separate minimum of 50% marks for theory and viva-voce put to­gether and practical and theoretical to secure a pass in Part I subject.

Students will be required to submit a record of laboratory work done by them during the course of study for the third year examination.

The examination will be held in the month of April and October. The students will not be required to appear for the subjects in which he/she has earned exemption in Part I subjects.

The report of the examiners of the dissertation will be taken into consideration in the final assessment of the results of the candidate at the examinations.

The candidates whose dissertations has not been accepted will have to re-submit of fresh 4 copies of dissertation when they appear next the last date for which will be IstMarch/IstSeptember.

The candidate shall be declared to have passed if he/she completely passed Part I and Part II of the final (III) year post-graduate course examination as per candidates mentioned above. All the other candidates shall be deemed to have failed in the examination.

FIRST YEAR M.D STDDHA (MARUTHUVAM) EXAMINATION

The first year examination will be held at the end of academic year and this will be a general examination of all the subjects as per details given below: -
